Black History is Canadian History! Most students in the Educational System in BC get bombarded with specific narratives in regards to Black Culture, and Black History- which focuses on Slavery. The Steelpan was born from the struggle of slaves losing their African drums to connect with their ancestors and community. Over the years they had to become creative and use materials around the island. It went from Tamboo Bamboo to discarded Oil Drums to the innovative and creative and only newly invented acoustic instrument of the 20th Century the- Steelpan. Using the Core Competencies of BC's Redesigned Curriculum, we will show students how Communication, Creative and Critical Thinking created Personal Positive Cultural Identities for the people of Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean.
Students will learn the following:
-
The History and evolution of the Steelpan from African Drums to its current drum.
-
Some of the influential people (Tuners, arrangers and musicians) that pushed the instrument forward.
-
A read aloud story “Boy Boy and his Magic Drum”.
-
How are steel drums made?
-
Students will get an opportunity to try playing a steelpan.
-
International Day of the Steelpan (August 11, 2023)
-
A performance of 4-5 songs showing the beauty and versatility of the instrument. Steelpan music is so infectious, it will make everyone want to dance!
This presentation can be impactful during Black History Month, but also throughout the whole school year. If this is something that you are interested in bringing to your district, school or classroom please send an email to mr_pan_man@yahoo.com with the following information:
