LEARNING TO PLAY THE STEEL PAN

Steelpan Lessons for all ages and range levels.  To develop into a competent and skilled steel pan player, there will need to be a lot of time dedicated to learning about the fundamentals and techniques for navigating the instrument with ease and confidence.

Adult Ensemble 18+ (There is no previous musical experience required for the Adult Steel Pan Ensemble.) Take a musical journey each week to learn traditional calypso, soca and reggae tunes, as well as familiar pop songs.

Members of the Group will learning about the following:

 

  • The History and Development of the Steelpan

  • The different types of instruments in the Steel Orchestra

  • Members will learn how to play relevant scales, appreggios, chords and musical theory on the instrument.

  • Memorize the template and order of the steel pan, and learn how to play by rote (or by ear).

  • Will have an opportunity to perform songs at local festivals and events throughout the year.

  • With practice- an opportunity to play in Panorama in Trinidad and Tobago.

  • 1 hour duration/per week.

Youth Ensemble (There is no previous musical experience required for the Youth Steel Pan Ensemble.) Take a musical journey each week to learn traditional calypso, soca and reggae tunes, as well as familiar pop songs)

 

Members of the Group will learning about the following:

 

  • The History and Development of the Steelpan

  • The different types of instruments in the Steel Orchestra

  • Members will learn how to play relevant scales on the instrument, memorize the template and order of the steel pan, and learn how to play by rote (or by ear).

  • Will have an opportunity to perform songs at local festivals and events throughout the year.

  • With practice- an opportunity to play in Panorama in Trinidad and Tobago.

  • Opportunities to look apply for scholarships at Universities for Steelpan performance (NIU, Florida Memorial, Etc).

  • 1 hour duration/per week

Individual/Private One on One Sessions:

​

There is also an opportunity to learn at your own pace, skill and expertise through private one on one lessons.  If you are interested in learning the basics to play, or wanting to develop your improvisational skills and aptitude- this may be another viable option for learning and growing your skillset with the instrument.  Each session will have a duration of 1 hour.
